Oil and Filter | Oil Filter Sequence

Most oil filters have a spin-on design. Position a drip pan under the filter area and unscrew the oil filter to remove it. Some filters may require the use of a special wrench for removal.  With the filter removed, make sure the mounting surface is clean.  Make sure the old filter's gasket did not stick to the filter-mounting surface on the engine. Coat the gasket of the new filter lightly with oil and thread it on the engine until the gasket contacts the base. More...

Then, finish installing the filter by tightening it to the filter manufacturer’s recommendations. If replacing a cartridge-type filter, make sure to replace any seals or o-rings as necessary and tighten the cartridge cap/housing to manufacturer's torque recommendations.
